Evanston music lovers were treated to an emotional concert on Saturday night, August 7, as Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals took to the stage near the first tee of the Canal Shores golf course. The opening act was Jake Etheridge and his band. Spokesmen for Out of Space, which produced the concert, and the Canal Shores Golf Course confirmed attendance to be between 2,600 and 2,700 paying attendees.

The weather forecast cooperated for the benefit of spectators. The predicted rain stopped, temperatures dropped, putting a dent in the oppressive humidity, and a breeze swept through the crowds as the night sky darkened. The audience seemed relaxed, munching on a mix of goodies from some of Evanston’s best restaurants and snacks they had brought home. Activity was also sustained in food trucks and stands offering beer and wine.

Ben Harper took the stage at 8 p.m. with his five band mates and played an assortment of hits from various studio albums over the years for over 90 minutes. One of the first songs on the setlist, “Steal My Kisses”, was by his Burn to shine album (1999), an ideal choice to thrill the crowd with an upbeat tempo, good rhythm and easy lyrics.

Other songs included “In the Colors” by the Safety rope album (2007), “Happy for all time[MOU1] In your eyes ”of the Both sides of the gun album (2006), “Trust You to Dig My Grave” by No mercy in this country album (2013). “Amen Omen” and “With My Own Two Hands” were both from Diamonds inside album (2003).

The gentle crowd seemed relaxed and happy to be entertained in a quiet, well-manicured lot near our home. All participants had to show proof of their COVID-19 vaccination status in order to enter, a requirement that added to the feeling of security and the relaxing atmosphere. Evanston Police had a lifeguard station along the gangway where tables were set up for local businesses offering merchandise sales, and a uniformed officer confirmed it was a quiet night without any major disruption.

The audience was a mix of families, groups of friends, young couples and empty nests, with a scattering of young people and teenagers. A couple, Amy and Brian Goss, were clearly having fun. The Ben Harper concert was their second in three days, after enjoying the Emily Lou Harris / Los Lobos concert Thursday night, which drew “an older crowd,” according to Amy. They’ve moved to Evanston in the past year and are having fun exploring the city and trying restaurants, especially as COVID-19 restrictions have eased a bit.

“Tonight’s concert was exceptional. It’s amazing to see these great bands here in Evanston, ”said Brian.

Ben Harper had a natural connection with the crowd, thanking the audience for coming, commenting on how awesome it was to be at a concert again and how thrilled he and the band were to be in Evanston. He also spoke poignantly about the recent loss of one of their bandmates, the late Juan Nelson, chief bassist and collaborator for almost 30 years. Nelson died on June 9 exactly two months ago, leaving a great void, Harper said, adding that Nelson was “irreplaceable” because he did so much and played so many roles in the band. On a page dedicated to Juan Nelson on the Harper website, he described Nelson writing: “No one can match the versatility, virtuosity and mastery of Juan Nelson. ”

Harper’s breadth of musicality, mastery of genres and several instruments was on full display on Saturday night. Even a casual listener unfamiliar with their music catalog could discern global influences as well as blues, rock, gospel, and folk. The lyrics conveyed a range of raw emotions – personal, romantic, angry, sad, upbeat and introspective. Commenting before a song, Harper said that in essence, regardless of gender, identity and sexuality, everything is fine – these are just words, we are all the same.

When the band left the stage about 90 minutes later, the crowd cheered and cheered for several minutes, begging them to come back on stage, which they did for two songs – one with the full band and one in solo for Harper, after which Harper thanked the crowd, took off his hat and walked away.

It was an appropriate punctuation mark for a nice evening.
