Based on the 1992 film directed, starring and co-written by Crystal, Mr Saturday night follows Borscht Belt comedian Buddy Young Jr., as he seeks to revive his career and mend his family relationships. Along with Crystal and Bean, the production stars Tony winner Randy Graff (City of Angels, Wretched) as Buddy’s wife, Elaine Young; Oscar-nominated David Paymer returns in his film role as Stan Yankelman, Buddy’s brother; and Chasten Harmon as his agent, Annie Wells. Jordan Gelber, Brian Gonzales and Mylinda Hull round out the ensemble.
The project reunites Crystal with the film’s original co-writers, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who adapted their original screenplay with Crystal, with a score by composer Brown and lyricist Green. Tony winner John Rando (Urineville, On the city) realizes with the musical direction of David O and the choreography of Ellenore Scott.
The production, currently running at the Nederlander Theater on Broadway, received five 2022 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Book (Crystal, Ganz and Mandel), Score (Brown and Green), Lead Actor in a Comedy Musical (Crystal) and Featured Actress in a Musical (Bean). Mr Saturday night features stage design by Scott Pask, costume design by Paul Tazewell and Sky Switser, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, video and projection design by Jeff Sugg, sound design by Kai Harada and the hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe. The production manager is Tripp Phillips. Orchestrations and arrangements are by Brown.
The Broadway cast album is produced by Jeffrey Lesser and Brown, co-produced by Sean Patrick Flahaven and associate produced by Green.
