Call for applications: UMOJA artist residency program in Tanzania

The program aims to open a cultural dialogue between East African and European artists, as well as to promote gender balance and social cohesion through the arts. Original works produced during the residency will be showcased in a repurposed open public space in Dar es Salaam, bringing artists and local communities together. The residency program will include an organized final presentation.

The call is open to artists and cultural professionals over the age of 18. Candidates must work in the fields of music, visual arts and dance. Artists from the following East African countries are eligible to apply: Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Musicians, visual artists and dancers from the following European Union member states should apply: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

UMOJA will provide the following during the residency program:

  • Accommodation.
  • Travelling expenses.
  • Per diem 10 € per day.
  • A stipend of €1,200.
  • Studio for practice and workshops.
  • Tools and work materials (to be discussed with the artists).

Applicants will be required to adhere to the UMOJA Artist Residency Terms and Conditions when submitting their application. Interested artists should apply here before March, 31st.

UMOJA is one of the 11 pilot projects selected to be implemented in 2022 by the National Institutes of Culture of the European Union within the framework of the European Spaces of Culture initiative. The initiative is designed to test innovative collaborative models in cultural relations between European and local partner organizations in countries outside the EU. At the heart of the project is a new spirit of dialogue, in which equality, mutual listening and learning represent the fundamental values ​​that contribute to building trust and understanding between people.
