Four internationally acclaimed classical and jazz musical artists make their Maui debut

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center announced two major additions to its program with a piano trio concert on April 21 featuring three award-winning artists, violinist Arnaud Sussmann joining cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han performing works by Beethoven, Saint -Saens and Mendelssohn. On May 26, Joey Alexander, 18-year-old jazz piano prodigy, performs for the first time in Maui with his trio. Tickets for both concerts will go on sale online only Wednesday, March 23 at 10:00 a.m. on MauiArts.org.
Piano Trio Sussmann/Finckel/Wu Han – April 21
Recipient of a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Fellowship, a prestigious Lincoln Center honor given to outstanding solo artists deemed to be exceptional in their field, Arnaud Sussmann has distinguished himself through his unique sound, bravery, and deep musicality. Pioneer Press of Minnesota writes, “Sussmann has an old-school sound reminiscent of what you’ll hear on vintage recordings by Jascha Heifetz or Fritz Kreisler, a rare combination of sweetness and softness that can mesmerize a listener. Its clear tone [is] a thing of awe-inspiring beauty, his haunting phrasing.” A dedicated chamber musician, he has been a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2006 and has performed with them regularly in New York and on tour.
The multifaceted careers of cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han as concert performers, artistic directors, recording artists, educators and cultural entrepreneurs distinguish them as two of today’s most influential classical musicians. Finckel and Wu Han have served as co-artistic directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) since 2004. They are recipients of Musical America’s Musician of the Year, one of the highest honors given to artists by the United States. They perform every year in the most prestigious series and concert halls in the world, as soloists and chamber musicians.
The program should include Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 1 in E flat major, Op. 1, n°1, Saint-Saëns Piano Trio n°1 in F major, op. 18, and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49.
Joey Alexander Threesome – May 26
Joey Alexander learned to play jazz at the age of six by listening to his father’s classic jazz albums. Making his Maui debut at age 18, this three-time Grammy-nominated jazz pianist has enjoyed a memorable whirlwind period over the past few years in which he has become one of the most acclaimed and successful young talents. accomplishments in the history of jazz. Early in Alexander’s rise, trumpeter and Jazz at Lincoln Center frontman Wynton Marsalis said that “there was never anyone … who could play like that at his age”. Marsalis, who basically “discovered” Alexander through his YouTube videos, was the one who invited him to New York. Alexander continues to maintain an unwavering dedication to his craft, continuing to evolve as one of today’s most distinguished composers and conductors.
