The concert, presented by the World Music Institute, is part of the US-based non-profit Women’s Voices series celebrating the role of female artists in preserving and promoting their respective cultures and traditions.

It is also part of the Apollo Next Movement performance season throughout this fall.

The Grammy-winning singer, who is behind eight albums, will perform songs from her extensive catalog, including her recent critically acclaimed collection, Timbuktu.

“Over the past eight decades, Apollo has amplified black voices and used its platforms to create an intersection of art and activism,” said Apollo Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes.

“Having Oumou perform a range of music from Wassoulou music to contemporary sounds is exactly the kind of artistic conversation we stand for.”

Activist and businesswoman known by the nickname “The singing bird of Wassoulou”, the work of Oumou Sangaré embraces the traditional music of Wassoulou and contemporary sounds. Thematically, her music centers on social criticism, in particular the low social status of women.

His illustrious career has drawn comparisons with global artists such as the Jamaican great Grace Jones and American legends Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin. She was also celebrated by pop stars including Beyoncé and Alicia’s Keys for her powerful voice and unwavering commitment to the betterment of women.
