Welcome to Seven in Seven, where each week we generally take a look at what shows will arrive in the region over the following week. And while the doors to the theaters are slowly opening again, due to the current pandemic, they’re not quite there yet. That doesn’t mean the music stops and new releases come out every week from artists you know and love and some are waiting to be discovered. Each week we’ll take a look at some of the best streaming shelves and services, and a must see show in the area.

Whether your musical tastes are rock and roll, jazz, heavy metal, R&B, singer-songwriter or indie, there will always be something to discover. Here’s what’s on the program for the week of January 7:

Show of the week

Motion City Soundtrack – The Fillmore – Tuesday

OK, things are a little tricky right now with concerts, so check before you go to a show. Motion City Soundtrack is our gig for the week, but who knows if they’re going to postpone, cancel or whatever. The pop punks have done all four of the aforementioned gigs in the past week, but at press time the date with Philly was still a date. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best at this point. After reuniting in 2019, MCS is a band that really needs to be experienced live, so if you’re comfortable with the situation, the Fillmore is the place to be next Tuesday.

New versions

The Wombats – “Fix Yourself, Not the World”

British independent rockers the Wombats return with “Fix Yourself, Not the World”. Recording remotely over the past year from their respective homes, the group has set themselves the goal of producing some of the most captivating, inventive and avant-garde music of their careers to date. It works, as they are set to embark on the UK’s most high-profile arenas tour, although only time will tell if it translates to these shores.

Les Dollyrots – “Deep in the rabbit hole”

“Down the Rabbit Hole” is a collection of 24 tracks of B-sides, rarities and covers of the Dollyrots. Florida’s diverse collection of punk rockers includes tracks from the band’s two-decade history, remastered and featuring never-before-seen songs and alternate takes. To give the whole thing a little more credibility, it is released on Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records, a vote of confidence if ever there is one.

At the movies – “The Soundtrack of Your Life – Vol. 2 (’90)”

If there are two things that we humans who argue over and over again can agree on, it’s movies and music. A close inspection of all of these iconic and defining films for the ’80s and’ 90s generation reveals that it’s the very fusion of the two that does the trick: there isn’t a blockbuster from this era that doesn’t have an equally legendary theme song or soundtrack. At the Movies is fully aware of this, and on “The Soundtrack of Your Life – Vol. 1 & 2 ”, the supergroup led by Chris Laney (Pretty Maids) transforms some of the most memorable and typical movie songs of the 80s and 90s into hard rock and entertaining versions that you certainly have never heard before or ever before. imagined. in this way

Steve Bernstein’s MTO – “Good Time Music (Community Music, V2)”

The Millennial Territory Orchestra captioned their new album ‘Community Music’ because MTO musicians have worked together for decades in various combinations, with beloved virtuoso trumpeter, arranger, conductor and composer Steve Bernstein at the center. of all. This time, they have come together to make this music that is essentially joyful even in the face of misfortune. It’s in the spirit of the New Orleans second line, alchimizing grief into a celebration of life; therefore, “Good Time Music (Community Music, V2).” Worth to be picked up.

Eric Nam – “Go back and forth again”

Ever-evolving K-pop star Eric Nam hits back with “There and Back Again,” showing his evolution from what will be – let’s be honest – another pop fad, into something much deeper. For those who are tired of the K-pop genre and worried about what they might do with “There and Back Again,” give it a shot. Jump your feet first. Sometimes that’s the only way to go.

Twin Atlantic – “Transparency”

Scotland’s Alt-outfit Twin Atlantic launches into “Transparency,” seeing singer and rhythm guitarist Sam McTrusty spilling his guts on everything from marriage, male friendship and social media nonsense to parenthood, to drugs and to his mother. Written under difficult circumstances and recorded remotely with McTrusty’s companion and mentor, Jacknife Lee, the album happened more by accident than by design when the world went into lockdown.

Sound check

• Motion City Soundtrack: “My Favorite Accident”
• The Wombats: “If you ever go, I’ll come with you”
• The Dollyrots: “Like all the others”
• In the cinema: “Heaven is a place on earth”
• Steve Bernstein’s MTO: “Yes, we can”
• Eric Nam: “Any other way”
• Twin Atlantic: “Bang on the Gong”
