Wynton Marsalis & The Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Septet

Trumpeter great Wynton Marsalis and members of his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra could pinch each other when they perform Saturday at the Balboa Theater and Monday at the Baker-Baum Concert Hall.

These dates were originally set for January 23 and 24, then postponed and reconfigured to drive-in concerts at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, then canceled due to “the relentless nature” of the coronavirus pandemic.

As COVID-19 is, alas, on the rise again, on Sunday Marsalis began their 2021 tour – a year late – in Kansas. His two concerts here, both presented by La Jolla Music Society, should be very different.

On Saturday, the Pulitzer Prize winner and his 14-piece big band will perform jazz classics in the 1,339-seat Balboa Theater. Their sold-out Monday gig at the 513-seat Baker-Baum will feature him with a six-piece band that will stretch in ways his larger ensemble can’t.

Jake Allen, with Alex DePue and Miguel De Hoyos

Not to be confused with London music producer of the same name, Michigan fingerstyle acoustic guitar specialist and vocalist Jake Allen cites Michael Hedges and Pat Metheny as key influences.

Also adept on drums and string harp, Allen has released four solo albums since 2009. For his three shows in Baja this weekend, he will team up with San Diego fiddle virtuoso Alex DePue and Mexican guitarist Miguel From Hoyos.

Allen and Depue will perform as a duo for their free Wednesday concert in San Diego. Expect plenty of high-octane musical treats from the six-string and four-string variety.

Joan Osborne, with The Weepies

It’s been 27 years since Joan Osborne had her breakthrough hit with “One of Us” and two years since her last tour before the COVID-19 shutdown of live events began in March 2020.

Her upcoming new album, “Radio Waves,” features live recordings she made on various FM stations between 1995 and 2002. It includes her version of Gary Wright’s “Love is Alive,” which Osborne recorded during a session for the KPRI in San Diego in 2000.

Expect to hear him and other Osborne favorites when the soulful singer performs here on Monday.
