SCHOFIELD – Have you ever wanted to adopt an alter ego? Well a local singer had the opportunity to do it during his debut on national television.
Kobe Vang, 23, works at Greenheck in Schofield. He was recently featured as a contestant in Fox’s new reality singing contest. “Alter ego,” which allows contestants to create a holographic version of themselves to sing in front of the judges, while the contestant is backstage singing and dancing.
Fox premiered the series on September 22. Vang appeared in the show’s second episode, which aired on September 23, and was eliminated later that evening. He was able to reveal himself to the judges for his final performance.
Vang helped develop his alter ego “Kai” with the show crew. He said he wanted something that was a mix between a cyborg and a member of a boy group.
“I felt like I really wanted to be this boy group character,†Vang told the Wausau Daily Herald. “I always wanted to be part of a boy group when I was younger.”
True to this character, Vang and “Kai” performed “Larger than Life” by Backstreet Boys and “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC.
Vang said he loved music growing up and was inspired by artists like Bruno Mars, Usher, and Adam Levine. When the chance to be on the show presented itself, he jumped at the chance.
The show’s famous judges include singer and former 98 ° boy band member Nick Lachey; Alanis Morissette, seven-time Grammy winner; producer and seven-time Grammy winner will.i.am; and singer, songwriter, producer and musician of Grimes (aka Claire Boucher).
Candidates compete to win $ 100,000 and have the chance to be mentored by famous judges.
Although the contestants perform as an alternate version of themselves, Vang said the experience gave him the confidence to perform on stage without his alter ego.
Overall, her favorite part of the experience was working with the show’s team and bonding with the other contestants.
“Just being able to be on stage, meet the famous judges and meet so many candidates, it was a crazy experience,†said Vang. “I will always treasure this moment.”
Vang said he hopes to continue pursuing a singing career. He said he plans to post some covers on his social media pages and may share some original music next year. People can follow Vang on Instagram and TIC Tac.
“Maybe I could get the chance to be on another show,†Vang said. “We’ll see what happens.”
