Atlanta rapper JID has enjoyed huge success, both as a member of the Spillage Village collective and as a solo artist on J. Cole’s Dreamville label. He even had ubiquitous success with “Enemy,” his collaboration with the band Imagine Dragons. But he still seems like a rising star – and his new album, The Eternal Story, still looks like an attempt to introduce it to an even wider audience. This new album kicks off this week’s discussion, as the panel raves about its prickly and evocative lyricism.
We also have new albums from cutting-edge Australian singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly, saxophonist and bandleader Miguel Zenón and wildly experimental electronic musician Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, plus a new box set covering the original series of Blondie from 1974 to 1982. This week New Music FridayKeanna Faircloth (host of the Artimity podcast), contributor Christina Lee (co-host of the Bottom of the map podcast) and NPR Music’s Hazel Cills join guest host Stephen Thompson.
