Throughout the stay-at-home order, the Surry Arts Council has offered online arts and other activities to people in the community, and continues to do so.

A highlight of the summer for many young people in the area is attending some of the many camps in the area, including those offered by the council. The local organization recently announced its plans for summer 2020, with some limitations in place due to COVID 19.

Ongoing or upcoming this summer, activities include:

• Madeline Matanick offers private art lessons for children and adults. These sessions can be used to work on painting, drawing or crafts. The mediums offered are acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. Private lessons can be for individuals or groups of two or three. Sessions can be scheduled by email (madi@surryarts.org) or SMS (843-697-8351).

She also organizes virtual painting lessons on Zoom. She packs individual paint kits (along with a lightly traced canvas, paints, plate, brush, and towel) for drive-through pickup at the Andy Griffith Playhouse parking lot, then everyone logs in via Zoom for the no to no painting lessons. After registration, participants will be notified of the pickup time for all materials and will be provided with connection instructions for the class. Virtual painting classes are offered weekly. The next course is “Doodle-Do! And it is designed for children and adults. The link can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/380574129503902/ For more information, contact Madeline at Madi@surryarts.org.

• Shelby Coleman offers private dance lessons for individuals and small groups. Any style, technique, beginner dance or beginner tumbling is available. Classes can be scheduled in the evening for one dancer, or groups of two to four dancers. To schedule private lessons or for any additional information, contact Coleman at shelby@surryarts.org.

It also offers online courses on Facebook. Classes vary from line dancing to fitness dancing to conditioning and more. Classes are currently every two evenings. Those interested should search Facebook for “Shelby’s Online Course”. The group is private, but she approves requests quickly. Once in the group, lessons can be streamed live or watched at any time. For singers of all ages, Zoom Karaoke takes place every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Each week a different theme. Email Coleman at shelby@surryarts.org for the link and password.
